    READING GROUP GUIDE (DISCUSSION QUESTIONS):

    1. What do you think the title of the book means?

    2. How are the three belief systems represented by Emma, Gerald and Dorje different from one another? What do they have in common? Is there any one belief system that resonates more with you personally than the others? If so, why?

    3. The story of Dawa’s journey from living as a monk to being a Freedom Fighter raises the question of whether violence is ever justified. What are your feelings about nonviolent resistance and its effects, especially in the case of Tibet?

    4. Gerald’s prison experiences of torture and isolation are typical of documented cases among Tibetans. What were your reactions to those passages?

    5. One of the themes of Falling to Heaven is the Quaker saying, “There is that of God in everyone.” Was this a sentiment you could agree with as you got to know the characters, including the communist ones?

    6. How did your understanding of Chinese communism grow during your reading of the book?

    7. There are some who make the claim that Tibet’s theocratic society was in need of the reform brought by the communists. What do you think?

    8. How did Emma’s experience of God change over the course of the story, and what were the events that changed her?

    9. What was your reaction to the chapter involving sky burial?

    10. Devout Tibetan Buddhists prepare for the moment of death throughout their lives. How does that compare with your own feelings towards the moment of your death?

    11. Early on, Gerald says that he’d like to find a guru/teacher. He is granted this wish in his relationship with Lama Tenzin. What lessons does he learn?
